Art Root Collective is a growing music collective made up of immigrants, refugees, and young Dutch musicians between the ages of 18 and 25. They all share a love for music and are looking for connections and opportunities for creative collaboration. The Art Root initiatives serve as a nurturing environment for exciting new works of art, as well as for artistic and personal growth, companionship, and wholehearted support.
It was the summer of 2017 when a group of 20 young people, all with different backgrounds, language, and story came together in Akoesticum because of that one shared passion, Music! Some of them live in an asylum seekers' center and others have lived in the Netherlands all their lives and are associated as flutists at the Dutch Flute Academy. After a few hours it is as if we have known each other for years and after a week of being immersed in an intensive creative process led by Maaike van de Linde and Gerte de Koe, the most surprising, striking and poetic compositions are created. Less than 5 days later we present all this new work in a smashing final concert at the Grachtenfestival! A transformative group process in which all the sparkling qualities of the group members together created the unique sound of… well.. what is our name? |
The name Art Root Collective comes from a poem written during this very first Intensive:
In each heart there is light and darkness. Let the darkness disappear like a melody, flying like a peace bird. That's why we are here, playing melodies and harmonies Dance for freedom. Between us the roots are different, but all rooted in the same earth. Turning and turning on its rhythm. |
